TIPS FOR MAKING THE BEST STRUDELS
Here are just a few baking tips and tricks that will make your homemade toaster strudels even better!
Use Store-Bought Puff Pastry. When it comes to using puff pastry, it’s always better to use store-bought or bakery-made products. Puff Pastry can be very difficult to make. Plus, it takes too long. I love a good shortcut, and this is one I highly suggest using.
Allow the Puff Pastry to FULLY Defrost. To make your life easier, make sure that the puff pastry is fully defrosted. I suggest leaving it in the refrigerator for 2 - 3 hours or leaving it at room temp for 30 minutes until fully thawed. This will make your dough easy to work with.
Refrigerate the Strudels before Baking. You want to make sure that your dough is cold for optimum flakiness. Once the strudels are fully formed, place them on sheet pans and refrigerate them for 15 - 20 minutes before baking.
Do Not Overfill the Strudels. Overfilling will cause the filling to leak out when baking. This will also cause the puff pastry to be slightly deflated.
PIZZA TOASTER STRUDEL Ingredients:
Okay now, let’s talk ingredients! These ingredients are very easy to find and use! You probably have some of them already in your pantry.
Puff Pastry: This is what’s going to make your strudels stand out! Puff pastry is a laminated dough which means that it has been folded multiple times and flattened to create many layers when baked. Make sure to use the package instructions to thaw.
Marinara Sauce: Use your favorite marinara sauce to fill and dip your strudels! If you’re having trouble finding one you like, here’s an easy recipe attached to my Arancini (fried risotto balls) recipe.
Pepperoni Slices: What would pizza be with some good slices of pepperoni? So, you know I had to add them into these strudels. I add about 4 - 5 per strudel. But, if you can fit a little more, be my guest!
Mozzarella Cheese: To make these strudels extra gooey and delicious, I added two layers of shredded mozzarella into them. The cheese pull when they are cracked open went crazy! Plus, you can never go wrong with a lil cheese.
Egg Wash: To help seal the strudels and make them extra golden brown, I used a simple egg wash. An easy egg wash is 1 cracked egg mixed with 1 - 2 tbsp of water or milk/cream.
All-Purpose Flour: To help the puff pastry dough not stick to your counter or cutting board, I sprinkled a little flour over the surface. You only need a little, so don’t go crazy.
Spicy Honey Drizzle: People have been loving hot honey on pretty much everything lately! So, I made a spicy honey drizzle with about ½ cup of honey and ½ tsp of crushed red pepper flakes. This spicy honey drizzle made these strudels even better.
How to Make Pizza Toaster Strudels:
These toaster strudels were too good not to finish! Did I mention they’re easy to make and take no time at all? You’ll have your friends thinking you really know how to bake!
The full written recipe is below, but here’s an overview:
STEP 1: Cook the Fries. Cook fries as directed on the package, until crispy. You can choose to bake, air-fry, or deep fry your french fries depending on your preference.
STEP 2: Make the White Sauce. In a large skillet or saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour; cook and stir for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in milk. Make sure to stir frequently until the sauce is thickened.
STEP 3: Add the Cheeses to Finish the Sauce. Add ½ cup of the Cheddar Cheese, ½ cup of Colby Jack Cheese, and the cubed Velveeta, stirring until the sauce is smooth and the cheese is melted. Remove from the heat and whisk in the hot sauce (optional).
STEP 4: Layer the Fries with Toppings. Remove the fries from the oven, air-fryer, or deep fryer. Preheat the broiler in your oven to high. Place half of your fries on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil or in a cast iron. Begin layering your fries with cheese sauce, chicken tenders, bacon, jalapenos, and the remaining shredded cheese. Repeat this process with the other half of the fries.
STEP 5: Broil the Cheese & Garnish. Broil for 1 to 2 minutes or just until the shredded cheese is bubbly. Top with some extra sliced jalapeños and chopped green onions. Drizzle with Ranch Dressing to serve and enjoy!
Can I make these ahead of time?
Yes! You can definitely make this dessert ahead of time! However, I personally suggest that you make them no more than 1 day in advance.
You can easily make the filling and defrost the puff pastry the day before. The strudels can be assembled and baked the next day.
HOW LONG WILL MY TURNOVERS LAST?
It’s nothing like eating a freshly baked strudel! But, for some reason, they don’t taste exactly the same the next day.
I highly suggest storing your strudels in an air-tight container once they are fully cooled. Place the strudels in the refrigerator. They will stay fresh for up to 3 - 4 days.
To refresh your strudels, throw them into a toaster oven or air-fryer for a few minutes (2 - 4 minutes) and they’ll be as good as new!
