Maryland-Style the Right Way!

If you didn’t know before, I was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. Being in the middle of the East Coast, I was exposed to so many different styles of food and seasonings. One thing that is unique to my hometown is OLD BAY SEASONING! We literally put that stuff on pretty much everything. It is a spice and herb mixture that is packed full of flavor!

If you haven’t tried Old Bay, I highly suggest it. With all of that said, it is only right that I mix one of my favorite seasonings with chicken wings! My Crispy Honey Old Bay Chicken Wings are smoky and sweet with just the right amount of spice! I know y’all are going to love these! I sure did!

Make them Baked or Air-FRIED!

These wings are so easy and delicious. But, I know that deep-frying is not the healthiest cooking method. Baking or Airfrying these wings require a slightly different set of directions, but the flavor is just the same! Take a look below for steps to make these wings baked or air-fried.

Baked or Air-Fried Wing Option:

  • Remove the flour and frying oil from the recipe.

  • Heat the oven to 425°F or the air-frier to 400°F

  • Add 1 tbsp of baking powder instead of 1 tsp. Toss the wings in the seasoning. The baking powder will help to create crispy wings.

  • Bake on a ½ sheet tray with a wire rack sprayed with non-stick spray. Bake or air-fry until crispy and fully cooked (about 20 - 25 minutes).

  • Turn the wings occasionally to maximize their crispiness.

  • Toss the wings in the sauce and enjoy!

Honey Old Bay Chicken Wing Ingredients

Let’s walk through each ingredient so you understand its importance. The real star of this recipe is, of course, the chicken wing! But, the sauce coats the wings beautifully. You won’t be able to get enough of them!

  • Party Wings/Wingettes: You can either buy the wings whole and cut them yourself, or buy the party wings pre-cut. It is solely up to you. If you decide to buy the frozen wings, make sure that they are fully thawed and dried before seasoning.

  • Cooking Oil: I like to use a little bit of cooking oil (i.e. vegetable, grapeseed, olive, etc.) to the chicken before I season it. The oil helps the seasoning to stick to the chicken a lot better.

  • Old Bay Seasoning: You must have this. This is one of the star ingredients! It is smoky and slightly spicy. The way that it tastes on the chicken is ridiculous!

  • Onion & Garlic Powder: You must have onion and garlic powder when frying chicken! They are the basic seasonings that make the chicken so much more flavorful.

  • Paprika: The paprika is added for its slight smokiness. Plus, it aids in creating a beautiful golden brown color on the finished chicken.

  • Kosher Salt: I have become a big fan of kosher salt over the past few years. I personally think it works as a better seasoning than regular table salt.

  • Ground Black Pepper: The ground black pepper gives the chicken some additional spice. Make sure you do not go crazy with this. You can’t take it out once you’ve put it in.

  • Baking Powder: Baking powder helps to make the chicken even more crispy! If you decide to bake your wings instead of frying them, the baking powder is going to make the skin extra crispy.

  • All-Purpose Flour: The flour acts as the coating for the chicken. The flour helps to make the skin crispy and golden brown.

  • Vegetable or Canola Oil: For frying, I suggest using a good frying oil such as canola, vegetable, peanut, corn, safflower, etc. You’re going to need about 2 quarts for deep-frying.

  • Honey: The honey makes the sauce slightly sweet. The mix of sweet and spicy is amazing on the wings. I used basic clover honey for this recipe.

  • Hot Sauce: I love spicy food, so I added some hot sauce to the recipe. It helps to amp up the Old Bay. If you have it or can find it, I suggest using the Old Bay Hot Sauce.

  • Lemon Juice: I used about 2 tbsp of lemon juice to help cut the spiciness of the sauce. The acid makes the sauce just right. Plus, acid and spice go great together!

How to Make Honey Old Bay Chicken Wings

These chicken wings are a wonderful appetizer, simple dinner, or snack! They even make an amazing sandwich. Being from Maryland, Old Bay Wings are a must! Well, Old Bay anything is a must! Get one while you can, because they will go fast!

The full written recipe is below, but here’s an overview.

  • Step 1: Heat the Oil First. Heat oil in a deep fryer or heavily weighted pot on medium-high heat.

  • Step 2: Combine the Seasonings. Mix together seasonings for the wings in a small bowl.

  • Step 3: Prep the Wings. Clean your wings and remove any excess skin. Make sure the wings are fully dry before seasoning. In a large bowl, add 3 tbsp of cooking oil and half of the seasoning mixture to the chicken wings. Mix until fully seasoned.

  • Step 4: Make the Seasoned Flour. In a large bowl or plastic Ziploc bag, mix together the remaining seasoning and flour. Toss the wings in the seasoned flour.

  • Step 5: Fry the Wings. Begin frying the wings in batches when the oil reaches 350°F. Fry until golden brown and crispy (about 6 - 8 minutes). The wings should reach 165°F internally. Typically, they will be fully cooked when they begin to float. Remove from the oil and drain on a wire rack or paper towel-lined plate.

  • Step 6: Make the Sauce. While the wings are frying, combine the ingredients for the sauce in a small saucepan on medium heat. When the sauce begins to bubble, turn the heat down to low.

  • Step 7: Toss, Serve, and Enjoy! When all of the wings are fully cooked, toss the wings in the heated sauce. Make sure that they are fully coated in sauce. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce and enjoy!
