Apple Brown Betty

Let me introduce y'all to Betty, Apple Brown Betty that is! Apple Brown Betty is a traditional American Dessert that is a hybrid between an apple cobbler and an apple crisp. It is decadent with just the right amount of sweetness. Add some vanilla ice cream and you are good to go!

C’mon and meet Betty!

So, there is someone I would like y’all to meet. I would like to introduce y’all to my friend Betty, Apple Brown Betty that is! To this day, I am still not entirely sure where the name originated. But, the taste makes up for that!

This dessert has become a staple dessert in my house over the years. I tried to recreate my father’s original recipe. He did not give me the recipe, of course. He said he would have to kill me if he ever told me. So, after years of watching him make it, I think I finally figured it out! There is probably something missing, but I can say that I made it my own.

BAking with apples

This is the perfect season for cooking with apples! They are in abundance and come in so many different types. Apples have so many health benefits that there is an old phrase about how they keep the doctor away. Of course that isn’t entirely true, but apples are amazing sources of fiber; and, they assist with overall immune support. The key to baking with apples, however, is choosing the right type. Take a look below for some of my favorite apples and what I use them for.

Apples for Baking: Granny Smith, Cortland, Pink Lady, Ginger Gold, and Ruby Frost

Apples for Cooking: Gala, Honeycrisp, and Empire, McIntosh

Apples for Eating: ALL OF THEM

One thing that I love about this dessert is that it bakes in one pan/skillet. There are no other moving parts that have to be baked along with it. The apples cook down from the heat of the oven in their own natural juices and additional sugar. The flour mixture acts not only as a thickener, but it adds a doughy texture to the dish. It’s like an all in one mixed up apple pie.  The slight crust that forms on the top comes out so brown and bubbly.

Tips for making this Deesert a Fan favorite

When making this dessert, make sure to even coat the apples in the sugar syrup mixture. You can even allow them to sit in the mixture for a while to get fully saturated. Do not skip out on the lemon juice in this recipe. The acid will cut some of the overall sweetness in the dessert. Plus, it will give the dessert a slight tang at the end.

This dessert can be served hot, warm, room-temperature or cold! If you feel like adding some more texture to the dessert, try adding some crushed nuts (walnuts, pecans, peanuts, etc.). For something extra indulgent, add your favorite ice cream on top. It will definitely put you in a food coma! I hope y’all enjoy this recipe! Tell me what you think in the comment section. Enjoy fam!
